About Our Pork
Our Pastured Pork is raised on a rotation of "pig pastures" set aside just for our beloved swine. Pigs tend to root and destroy regular pasture, so we choose to rotate them through Annual pastures consisting of various delicious forages. Our pigs are free to roam the pasture and root as they please. We do not clip tails or teeth, nor do we administer hormones, antibiotics, or vaccines to our swine. Should an animal require an antibiotic to save its life, we would use one. However, we would remove that pig from the meat supply and keep it for personal use.
About our Pigs
In our pork production we use breeds known for tremendous flavor as well as natural foraging ability. We use a cross of two heritage breeds: Gloucestershire Old Spot and Large Black. These breeds are very rare, but produce meat that is much more flavorful than modern "white" pork. Our pork has a much redder color, along with a layer of intra-muscular fat, which is essential to great tasting, tender pork. We crossbreed these two breeds with a Yorkshire boar currently, in order to produce pork with great taste that grows well also. We are looking into attaining a couple of heritage breed boars for future pork production.
About Our Methods: Farrow to Finish
We believe that a pig should be allowed to be a pig. That means that we do things very differently than modern factory pork operations. We are a farrow to finish farm. That means that all pork produced by us is born on our farm. This means we know exactly how the pigs were raised from birth until slaughter. This allows us to be confident that the pork we produce is consistently of excellent quality. We do not confine our sows in farrowing crates when they farrow (give birth). We allow them to build their own nest and farrow as they see fit. We supplement some heat for the piglets in cool weather under a farrowing rail or enclosure, but otherwise we let nature take its course. We also do not cut tails or needle teeth on our piglets. We believe this stresses the pigs, and causes them unnecessary pain. We believe in what we do, and hope you will be confident in our production as well. This is the pork we feed our own family, and we hope you will enjoy it as well!
